Cofee Farmer
Robin Leu is a coffee farmer from Masilakaiufa, in the Goroka area of Papua New Guinea. He has been working the land since he was 6 to 8 years old. For his community, coffee is the main cash crop: it pays school fees, feeds families and covers many other needs. The local saying sums up this bond: “Look after coffee and in return coffee will look after you.” However, since around 2000, production has been weakened. According to our witness, reduced rainfall linked to climate change, along with the coffee berry borer, damages the plants. Robin fears this could permanently cut off his community’s main source of income. He calls on the authorities to help them find solutions and treatments to revive coffee production, for them and for future generations.
