Semisi Cama, a 72-year-old Fijian, remembers: “In the early 1990s, paper bags were still given out in shops. Then gradually all paper bags were replaced by plastic bags. The result: the plastic waste that littered the beaches disintegrated into micro-particles that were ingested by the fish that we in turn ate.
